Learners from the Motherwell high schools will conduct a march to hand over a petition to Police, ECLB, parents and liquor traders as a show of solidarity and fight against the liquor traders’ rampant tendency of selling alcohol to the underage persons. This follows the recent tragic death of 21 young people at Enyobeni Tavern in East London.
The petition will seek to urge police to clamp down on the sale of alcohol to the underage persons and to take a decisive action against liquor traders who are involved in this distasteful behaviour.
The march is facilitated by learners who are ambassadors of the Eastern Cape Liquor Board from 11 Motherwell high schools. The learners have felt strongly that they must take an action against the scourge of underage drinking and prevent the Enyobeni incident from repeating itself elsewhere in the province.
This will be an opportunity to further urge other young people and members of the community to play a meaningful role in alleviating the plague of underage drinking.
The learners’ march will be joined by parents, community members, the clergy, and educators.
After the handing over of petition to the police station (Station Commander) learners will proceed to the community hall where a formal session will be held in honour of the 21 young people who perished at the Enyobeni Tavern. A candlelight will be conducted in remembrance of the deceased young people.
