EASTERN CAPE LIQUOR BOARD ENCOURAGES YOUNG PEOPLE TO EMULATE THE YOUTH OF 1976 BY ABSTAINING FROM ALCOHOL ABUSE

In commemorating June Month, Eastern Cape Liquor Board urges young people of the Eastern Cape to follow on the footsteps of the 1976 youth by prioritising education and abstaining from alcohol abuse.

Young people are associated with high rate of alcohol consumption, including those that are underage (under 18). Many schools in the Eastern Cape report escalating cases of learners who indulge in alcohol. This behaviour is further exacerbated by liquor traders who sell alcohol to learners, especially those that are in close proximity to schools. This is undoubtedly a loathful behaviour, and Eastern Cape Liquor is sending a stern warning to liquor traders who are involved in this abhorrent behaviour and harsh action will immediately be taken against such liquor traders.

Disturbingly, pupils as young as 14 years old are reported to be experimenting with alcohol, and this is largely attributed – among others – to lack of proper parenting and lack of role models in the communities. It is also greatly concerning to realise that there are parents who send their children to purchase alcohol for them. ECLB strongly condemns this irresponsible behaviour by parents. 

As we are approaching winter season, there is bound to be homecoming traditional festivities, and this is the period again when many young people abuse alcohol and parents are oblivious this behaviour. We, therefore, urge parents and communities to curb alcohol abuse amongst young people during these ceremonies as this potentially perpetuates alcoholism among young people.  As the country commemorates June Month, young people are reminded to prioritise their career prospects by focusing on education.  We encourage the youth to protect and safeguard the gains made by the youth of 1976, by staying sober and refraining from abusing alcohol.
